That Which Must Be Bound

2024 - Lumachrome Acrylic Facemount

In That Which Must Be Bound, I explore the uneasy tension between containment and the unknowable. Dark, formless voids emerge across the surface, interrupted by fractured bands that feel like restraints holding something that cannot be fully defined. The work is not about a figure or a subject, but about the presence of something ancient, something that resists understanding.

In creating this piece, I drew on the atmosphere of Lovecraftian lore, the sense of cosmic entities too vast, too alien, to be fully comprehended. The textures and iridescence suggest age, ritual, and quiet oppression, as if the surface itself bears the marks of a containment long enforced. The voids and fractures invite the viewer into an uneasy space, where absence becomes active, and the tension between form and formlessness is palpable.

I wanted the work to withhold rather than reveal, to suggest rather than explain. That Which Must Be Bound is a meditation on the unseen, the unknowable, and the quiet horror of something that exists just beyond the reach of human perception.
